Supporting healthy cholesterol levels often starts with diet and lifestyle, but these supplements are commonly used alongside a heart-healthy routine. Evidence varies a lot by product: plant sterols/stanols have the most consistent evidence for modestly lowering LDL, while standard fish oil mainly affects triglycerides and doesn’t reliably lower LDL. Red yeast rice can lower LDL substantially, but only because some products contain monacolin K — the same compound as the statin drug lovastatin — so it should be treated as a statin-like exposure, not a routine natural add-on. Never combine red yeast rice or berberine with a prescription statin without your doctor’s guidance, and don’t stop, replace, or adjust prescribed cholesterol medication on your own. “No-flush” niacin has not been shown to meaningfully improve cholesterol levels. Talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement. This post contains affiliate links; we may earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
